Riyadh rejects new UN envoy for Gaza
RAMALLAH (Ma'an) 16 Dec — In a surprise move, Riyadh rejected a request by the Palestinian Authority to set up an Israeli envoy to Egypt for an emergency meeting on Dec. 15. "The reason for this decision was conveyed to us by the Palestinian Authority," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement to Ma'an. "It was made clear that the Palestinians believe that the visit of the Palestinian High Representative to Egypt would only strengthen its support and participation in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict." In its previous statement to Ma'an, the Foreign Ministry denied that the Saudi delegation had requested the assignment of an Egyptian representative. The government on Friday did not respond to a request for comment. The Palestinian delegation to Cairo was appointed to the meeting after Riyadh withdrew its envoy to Cairo on Dec. 18 after Abbas signed a bill seeking to allow Palestinians, some of whom have been in the occupied West Bank for some 40 years, to move to Egypt. The bill was put forward by Yasser Arafat's Fatah and endorsed by Israel but was defeated in the House of Representatives. Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry had initially said it would invite the Palestinians and support their efforts. Saudi Arabia's move to oust Abbas and Fatah's new representatives was a surprise, given their closeness to each other. Abbas has made frequent statements about supporting Hamas and Abbas is a key member of Abbas' Fatah faction. According to a Palestinian source, the Palestinian delegation had sought to use the scheduled meeting to discuss an Israeli proposal to create a Palestinian enclave in the West Bank and to address the나비야 마사지 threat of Hamas entering a southern Israeli city. The Palestinian foreign ministry earlier called for a meeting between Palestinian leadership and Israeli representatives at the request of Abbas.
